The Pellegrino tour begins

It turned out to be a lucky decision to move onto the island early because we used up far more time than we expected getting to Catania Airport.

First we had a look around Taormina and it's tiny roading network with too many cars! I guess we were adding to the problem.

Speaking of cars; fun fact, we have not seen a single Ferrari in Italy in 5 weeks!

Next we thought it would be clever to use some spare time finding a laundry in Catania. This proved to be a silly idea as we used up the spare time and stretched Google maps qualities to the limit in narrow, one way (unless you're local), cobbled, broken lane ways.

There was an element of tourism about the experience (so this is how they function) and a lesson not to do it again!

We were too busy contemplating everything in front of us to take any photos for you sorry. Perhaps go to Google street view yourselves for a look!

Ultimately we cancelled the laundry plan and decided more deodorant would be easier. 🙂

Working our way through a web of roading to drop the rental car back became a point of significant relief knowing that we would now be driven everywhere else.
Unbroken.

The car was very useful, but you need to be a confident driver if you are planning a trip here and want to drive.

Next we met our driver, and two ladies who flew in at that time, and were driven in comfort to Ragusa.

Ragusa is another lovely, old, community with a very welcoming feel to it. (2 sleeps here).
By 6pm we met the 10 other 'groupies', plus Francesco (guide) and Nicky. Thank God Colin (from accounts?) is here otherwise I'd be there only bloke!

Rapid introductions; they are all lovely down to earth folk from across NZ. It's going to be a good group holiday.
Francesco explaining the week. Nicky to his right.

Then we headed out for a walking tour and our first dinner together.
On the left we have...
Bands and people gathering in the Piazza to celebrate St George.
One is a rock band still playing outside our hotel at 11pm.
Lovely outdoor terrace setting.
The St George event has delivered fireworks and pretty lighting to the town.
Our hotel on the Piazza.
The latest of many Duomo (of St George this time).
Main street away from the Piazza.
