Being on a hill results in more profile, making for a 3 dimensional playing board within which you can more easily become lost.
Driving in was easy with the qualities of Google maps, but it would test any navigator armed only with a paper map!
We booked a park in a garage (crazy not to) and walked the last 400m.
As always, they are very proud of their churches and point out that out hotel was once an old church dug into the side of the hill (like many houses in the old history of this place).
Mind you, Matera has been abandoned more than once and it is perhaps only tourism that is bringing it back. There are many churches, many accommodation doors and many food outlets.
Interestingly, for the first time there aren't many immigrants trying to sell us junk. It's not appealing having them drift through restaurants and lurk around your table asking to to buy things.
