Rome Day 4

Very few steps today, because 50% of it was didn't on a bicycle (tour).

Like food tours it was another great way to see more and learn more about an area, with far fewer 'sheep'. We however meet another fun group of travellers.
One of the gates in the walls around Rome. Stripped of all marble.... By the jolly churches of the day! They really weren't keen on history and heritage, although at that stage they probably hadn't forgiven Nero 😂.

The historical and religious stories are coming so thick and fast it is hard to keep up.... So we purchased a summary to help understand 😁
The cycling continued past the San Sebastian catacombs (one of many). It's a little odd walking through underground cemeteries but it is very informative and, sadly, they had all been raided as soon as Roman power faded in each area. (No photos allowed).

Next we rode, uncomfortably, on the Appian Way (an original Roman Rd South). Good to see and consider but not to ride!
Then across parklands to see Roman and middle ages aquaducts. More very impressive engineering, which should embarrass NZ councils with their poor water management 2000 years later.
Spot the happy tour guide.
This aquaduct is only 500 years old.

Originally we planned a sleep in tomorrow but early is usually best for space to move.... And we are keen to see St Peters square and the new Pope on the balcony 😂
Then have another go at getting in to Castel Sant'Angelo.

As nice as Florence was, Rome has become our preference between the two.
